Introduction
Recently, one of our users completed a mobile live stream on the highway, broadcasting from Tainan to Taipei for over four hours without issues. Now, we’d like to introduce Mr. Le, a professional user with extensive experience.
Mr. Le, also known as 富哥(Fu Ge), is the owner of PQS Store, a media arsenal and a distributor of YoloLiv in Taiwan, as well as a client of REUN SHOP. With extensive experience in the live streaming market, he specializes in equipment planning, troubleshooting various streaming challenges, and providing tailored solutions based on different application scenarios. As a knowledgeable expert, he occasionally teaches courses on live streaming at universities.
Next, we will delve into Mr. Le’s live streaming experience and hear why he chose to conduct a live test on the highway, as well as the insights and lessons learned from this successful mobile live streaming scenario for future similar events.
Why Live Stream on the Highway?
“Some clients are involved in temple fairs, weddings, or reality shows and want to provide an authentic experience through live streaming during their events, allowing friends and family, or the audience, to see the most genuine moments. In general, live streaming does not usually encounter issues with network interruptions; however, when moving at high speed, network signal problems can arise.
Using YoloBox Ultra, which is compact and can be securely mounted in my car with just one clamp, ensures stability and safety with quick installation. In future live scenarios, as long as I use the YoloBox Ultra with three SIM card aggregation in a high-speed environment, I can maintain uninterrupted streaming. This was my first operation, and I successfully completed over four hours of streaming. I plan to continue such tests in the future to share with everyone.”
What specific challenges did you encounter during previous tests?
“We tested several devices. For convenience, we typically choose smaller live streaming equipment, like mobile phones, and avoid using computers due to their bulkiness and setup challenges in the car. However, mobile phones can be unstable. Moreover, they require additional accessories for multiple signal inputs and power supply, with heat dissipation being the biggest issue.
I once spent hours setting everything up, only to go live for less than 30 minutes. The streaming signal kept dropping while traveling at 120 km/h on the highway. In fact, my stream was interrupted over ten times in two hours, even with the network aggregation feature.
Additionally, the equipment overheated, making the streaming system unstable due to insufficient heat dissipation and exposure to sunlight. Furthermore, the power supply drained quickly, causing sudden interruptions in the stream. Overall, these were very frustrating experiences after working hard to set up the live streaming environment.”
Setup Details for this live stream
1. Cameras:
GoPro Hero 12: Connected to the Ultra switcher via HDMI, mounted on the front windshield for capturing the view ahead.
DJI Action 4: Connected to the Ultra via a Type-C to Type-C cable for a second angle.
Mevo Start: Utilizes NDI functionality for wireless capability, allowing easy setup and angle switching via a phone (up to nine angles).
2. Networking:
Chunghwa Telecom 4G SIM Card: Installed in the Ultra’s main unit for internet connectivity.
Wi-Fi Hotspot: Shared from another phone (on FarEasTone) to the Ultra.
4G Wi-Fi Device: Connected via RJ45 to the Ultra for a third network source, also supporting NDI.
3. Audio:
Hollyland Lark Max: Wireless microphone connected to the Ultra’s line input.
Background Music Feature: Utilized on the Ultra to enhance the live stream with music.
4. Mounting Equipment:
Mounting Clamp: Priced under 200 TWD (about 5 USD) to secure the main unit in the car, allowing visibility of the feed and control of the Ultra.
Besides stability, what specific features of the YoloBox Ultra impressed you?
“Firstly, its network bonding (using three networks during the process) is excellent. On many routes, the upload speed was only 1 Mbps, yet it still managed to stream without interruptions.
Secondly, I could clearly monitor the current network traffic, and the user interface was straightforward, making it particularly friendly for beginners to quickly adjust based on the overall network status.
Thirdly, the ability to record in 4K during the live stream is convenient for post-production editing, providing great material.
Additionally, the power supply system is stable; even if external power suddenly fails, the built-in battery can provide up to six hours of operation, ensuring that there are no interruptions in the video signal or overheating issues.
What’s more, the wireless image transmission via NDI is also very convenient.
Lastly, the new background music feature helps keep the live stream engaging during long sessions.”
